3.2.2 Devices. The desk light shall be furnished complete with reflector, ballast, lampholders, switch, wiring, and all other devices necessary for operation including two fluorescent lamps as specified in 3.2.2.1 or 3.2.2.2.
3.2.2.1 Type I, 15-watt lamps. The type I desk light shall use and be furnished with two 15-watt, 18 inch (45.7cm), T-8 cool white fluorescent lamps.
3.2.2.2 Type II, Compact energy-efficient lamps. The type II desk light shall use and be furnished with to 9-watt or 13-watt compact T-4 cool white fluorescent lamps as specified.
3.2.3 Construction. The lamps bases, articulated arms, supports, reflector and reflector housing shall be fabricated from one or more of the following: iron, steel, brass, bronze, aluminum alloy, zinc alloy, or magnesium alloy. White-metal castings (lead) shall not be used in any of the product. Each desk light shall consist of a metal base with one or more articulated arms, on the upper end of which shall be mounted a reflector and reflector housing. The luminaire head may be composed of ABS or other suitable plastic. The reflector shall be a separate part of the luminaire head.
3.2.4 Exposed edges. Exposed edges shall be so finished that personal injury due to sharp edges will not occur under any normal use.
3.2.5 Base. The base shall be of cast, pressed, or spun metal. The base area and weight shall be sufficient to cause the ligh5t to be freestanding on a horizontal surface. When inclined at an angle of 8 degrees from the horizontal in any direction, the light shall not overturn. The bottom of the base shall be a plane surface and shall be covered with a dark colored felt at least 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) thick or provided with other suitable means to prevent scratching of the surface on which the light rests. If an adhesive is used to attach the felt or other suitable material to the base, there shall be no evidence of penetration or wicking.
3.2.6 Articulated arms. The desk lamp shall have one or more arms (or columns) of cast sheet metal, formed sheet metal tubing. The arms may be attached at the base and the reflector springs, and band shall be housed inside the arms. The wall thickness and the method of attachment to the base and the reflector housing shall be sufficient to provide the strength and rigidity required to successfully fulfill the test requirements of this cid. The length of the arm(s) shall be a minimum of 15 inches (38.1 cm) and a maximum of 34 inches (86.4 cm). The length shall be such that the light remains in any position it is placed without spontaneous movement due to gravitational pull or spring action of the articulated arm.
