COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
LIGHT, DESK (FLUORESCENT)
The General Services Administration has
authorized the use of this commercial item
description (CID), for all Federal agencies.
1. SCOPE
1.1 Scope. This commercial item description (cid) covers two types of freestanding, portable fluorescent desk lights.
2. CLASSIFICATION
2.1 Classification. The desk lights shall be of the following types (see 7.3):
Type I – Standard 15-watt lamps
Type II – Compact energy-efficient lamps
3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
3.1 Fire and casualty hazards. Each contractor shall submit proof that the desk lights they propose to supply under this cid conform to the requirements of Underwriters’ Laboratories, Inc., Standard UL 153. Evidence of conformance with UL 153 shall be the Underwriters’ Listing Mark affixed to the light. In lieu of the Underwriters’ Listing Mark, the contractor may submit a test report from an independent laboratory, acceptable to the Government, indicating that the desk light conforms to applicable requirements of the published standards, including methods of tests of UL 153. Compliance with the above preliminary requirements in regard to fire, safety and casualty hazards does not absolve the contractor from complete compliance with the other requirements of this cid in order to secure acceptance of the material or equipment.
3.2 Design.
3.2.1 Current. The desk light shall be designed for operation on 110-125 volt, 60-cycle alternating current
