3.5 Base.
3.5.1 Type I. The base shall have a covering of spun or shaped steel or of zinc ally pressure-cast die casting. The base area and weight shall be sufficient to cause the light to be free standing on a horizontal surface and to prevent the light from overturning when the base is inclined at an angle of 8 degrees from the horizontal in any direction as required by UL 153. A felt pad not less than 0.035 inch (0.9 mm) thick of a color to harmonize with the light finish shall be cemented to the bottom of the base. Provision shall be made for the cord where it exits the column below the base so that the light base shall not sit directly on the cord and create a stability problem or chafe the cord.
3.5.2 Type II. The base shall be of formed steel cast or iron and shall be equipped with steel mounting screws which will permit opening up to at least 2 inches (3.1 cm.) Felt as specified in 3.5.1 shall be permanently affixed to the opposing binding surfaces of the clamp.
3.6 Column. The column shall be metal and shall consist of an upright attached to the base and a flexible arm attached to the upper end of the upright, or it shall consist of a flexible arm attached to the base. The reflector housing shall be attached at the upper end of the column.
3.6.1 Movement of column. Starting with the light on a horizontal surface so that the front and back edges of the reflector housing are in a plane parallel to the surface on which the light rests, the column shall be sufficiently flexible to permit the reflector housing, lampholder, and lamp to be moved vertically upward through an angle of at least 90 degrees. Starting as above, the column shall also permit the reflector housing, lampholder, and lamp to be moved through a horizontal angle of at least 135 degrees. The column shall remain in the position selected along the 8 inches (20.3 cm) or flexibility requires by 3.2.3.
3.7 Reflector housing assembly. The reflector housing and reflector shall be metal and shall be securely fastened to the flexible tubing or the lampholder at its upper end. The reflector housing and reflector may be integral or consist of a separate housing and reflector. The size and construction shall permit the insertion and removal of a standard 60 watt medium screw base incandescent bulb. When inserted into the socket, no portion of the lamp shall be parabolic shaped and the plane bounded by the rim shall be essentially circular.
