COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
LANTERN, ELECTRIC
(RECHARGEABLE)
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description in preference to Federal Specification W-L-210A, Types I and II.
Salient characteristics:
The lantern shall be a complete unit including battery case, light source, switch, handle, reflector assembly, necessary wiring and contacts, a sealed lead acid or nickel-cadmium battery, charger, electric cord (separate or attached), and an adjustable stand or reflector assembly.
Service. Two-and one-half hours continuous service at 70o + 5oF without recharging. For the type I lantern the battery or batteries shall have a minimum of 4.0 volts for rechargeable lead acid or a minimum of 5.0 volts for rechargeable nickel cadmium.
For the type II lantern the battery or batteries shall have a minimum of 4.0 volts for rechargeable lead acid or a minimum of 3.6 volts for rechargeable nickel cadmium.
The battery shall be capable of being recharged a minimum of 200 times.
The charger shall operate on 120 V a.c, 60 Hz., and shall be an integral part of the lantern.
The charger shall recharge the battery within 24-hours at 70o + 5oF.
The charger shall have the capability of preventing damage to the battery from overcharging.
The lantern shall be rain-tight as defined in paragraph 32 of UL Standard No. 1236.
Short circuit protection for the internal components.
Beam candlepower. The minimum bean candlepower (candelas) shall be as indicated in table I. the test distance shall be 10-feet between the lantern and photoreceptor. The photoreceptor shall be calibrated using the standard lamp with color temperature of 2856oK. The photoreceptor shall have a minimum diameter of 1-inch and be equipped with a light filter to yield a response curve matching that of the International Commission on Illumination Standard Observer. The calculation shall be as follows:
I= ED2
Where I= Illuminous intensity of the light beam in the candelas.
E= Illuminance reading of photometer calculated in footcandles
D= Distance between lantern lens and photometer.

The lantern shall have the UL listing mark for rechargeable electric lanterns.
The issue of UL No. 1236 and other test programs in effect on the date of solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with these requirements.
Certification. The contractor shall certify that the product offered meets the salient characteristics of this description, and that the product conforms to the producer’s own drawings, specifications, standards and quality assurance practices and is the same product offered for sale in the commercial marketplace. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance prior to first delivery and thereafter as may be otherwise provided for under the provisions of the contract.
Recovered materials. The manufacturer shall utilize recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable.
